Understanding the Proxy List: Key Terms Explained

Protocol: HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4/5, VLESS, VMess, Shadowsocks & Trojan

The protocol determines what kind of traffic the proxy can handle. Our comprehensive list includes both traditional and modern protocols, from reliable HTTP proxies to advanced SOCKS5 proxies and cutting-edge V2Ray protocols.

Traditional Protocols:

  • HTTP: Basic web browsing and HTTP websites
  • HTTPS: Secure HTTP with SSL/TLS encryption
  • SOCKS4: Versatile TCP traffic handling
  • SOCKS5: Advanced with authentication support

Modern V2Ray & Advanced Protocols:

  • VLESS: Next-gen lightweight V2Ray protocol
  • VMess: Original V2Ray with encryption & obfuscation
  • Shadowsocks (SS): Fast SOCKS5 with encryption
  • ShadowsocksR (SSR): Enhanced with traffic obfuscation
  • Trojan: TLS-based stealth proxy protocol

💡 Pro Tip: V2Ray-based protocols (VLESS, VMess, Trojan) offer better security and can bypass advanced censorship, while traditional protocols (HTTP, SOCKS) work well for basic proxy needs and older applications.

Anonymity Level: Elite vs. Anonymous

This tells you how well the proxy hides your identity and protects your privacy. Different anonymity levels offer varying degrees of protection. For maximum privacy, consider using options from our elite proxy list.

  • Elite (High Anonymity): Completely hides your IP and doesn't reveal that you're using a proxy
  • Anonymous: Hides your IP but websites can detect you're using a proxy
  • Transparent: Reveals both your real IP and that you're using a proxy

Speed (ms) and Uptime (%)

These metrics help you choose the most reliable proxies for your needs:

  • Speed (Response Time): How quickly the proxy responds to requests. Lower numbers are better (under 500ms is good)
  • Uptime: How often the proxy is available and working. Higher percentages are better (above 95% is reliable)

Our list is tested in real-time every 15 minutes to give you the most accurate and up-to-date performance data.

The Honest Truth: Risks and Rewards of Using Free Proxies

⚠️ Important: Understand the Risks

We believe in transparency. While free proxies can be useful for many legitimate purposes, they come with inherent risks that you should understand:

  • Security Concerns: Free proxies may log your data or inject malicious content
  • Unreliable Performance: They can be slow, frequently go offline, or have bandwidth limitations
  • No Support: If something goes wrong, there's usually no customer support to help
  • Potential Legal Issues: Some free proxies might be compromised or used for illegal activities

✅ Good Use Cases for Free Proxies

Despite the risks, free proxies can be perfectly suitable for certain activities:

  • Testing and Development: Great for developers testing geo-restricted features
  • Casual Browsing: Accessing region-blocked content for personal use
  • Small-Scale Research: Gathering public information from different geographic locations
  • Learning and Education: Understanding how proxy technology works

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Free Proxy List

How often is this proxy list updated?

Our automated system re-tests and updates the entire proxy list every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This ensures you always have access to the freshest and most reliable proxies available. Dead or slow proxies are automatically removed from the list.

Are these proxies safe for web scraping?

Free proxies can be used for small-scale, non-critical web scraping tasks, but they come with limitations. They may be unreliable, have IP bans, or rate limiting. For serious commercial web scraping projects, we recommend reading our detailed guide on proxies for web scraping to understand best practices and alternatives.

Why do some free proxies not work?

Free public proxies are often temporary and can go offline without notice. They might be:

  • Overloaded with too many users
  • Blocked by websites or services
  • Shut down by their administrators
  • Experiencing technical issues

This is why our real-time testing is crucial. If one proxy doesn't work, simply try another from the list.

What's the difference between VLESS, VMess, and Shadowsocks?

These are modern, advanced proxy protocols that offer better security and censorship resistance compared to traditional HTTP/SOCKS proxies:

  • VLESS: The newest V2Ray protocol, lightweight and fast with minimal encryption overhead
  • VMess: V2Ray's original protocol with built-in encryption and traffic obfuscation features
  • Shadowsocks: Fast, simple SOCKS5 proxy with strong encryption, popular in Asia
  • Trojan: Mimics HTTPS traffic to bypass deep packet inspection

These protocols require compatible clients like V2RayN, Clash, or ShadowsocksX-NG. Use our protocol parser tool to decode configuration URLs for these advanced protocols.

Do I need to download any software?

It depends on the protocol type:

  • Traditional proxies (HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS): No special software needed. Use built-in browser or system proxy settings.
  • Modern protocols (VLESS, VMess, Shadowsocks, Trojan): Require compatible clients like V2RayN, Clash, Shadowsocks, or similar applications.

Follow our step-by-step setup guides for detailed instructions on configuring different proxy types and protocols.

Can I use these proxies for gaming or streaming?

While technically possible, free proxies are generally not recommended for gaming or streaming due to high latency, bandwidth limitations, and frequent disconnections. For these use cases, you'll want dedicated gaming proxies or VPN services that offer optimized servers and guaranteed performance.

Follow our gamer's ultimate guide for detailed explanations and tips on optimizing your gaming experience.

How can I test if a proxy is working?

The easiest way to test a proxy is to configure it in your browser and visit our IP address checker tool. If the proxy is working, you'll see the proxy's IP address instead of your real one. You can also use our proxy checker tool to test multiple proxies quickly.
